I have (at last) obtained an original 6309-7040 that needs a (bit) of work but has a great original dial, hands and bezel, case a bit beat up but no big dings and when I am finished with it its going to be worth a million dollars  ;)

So I am going start work on gathering the tools I will need this week to follow John's 6309 project which I am so looking forward too.

Have been offered this by a fellow on another forum, what do you think? Should this be the one to keep and not wear? I hope linking to a personal forum is not against the rules!

That does look really good but not sure the hands are original!

I would like to offer a couple of tips when buying from the auction sites or forums:
Often not a good idea to buy when under the influence of drink or wacky bachy or sleep deprivation, I am not saying any of these refer to your buying patterns just a general observation  :57:
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is  to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there :)

That is a very nice, and stunningly photographed example but personally I think the cost is very high. While not impossible, I also have found it rare on the 704X that the lume toning between dial and hands differs significantly. It could be the lighting but this tone appears quite disparate on this particular example and it would at least cause me to try to determine more about the watches overall provenance. Hands do appear original however and the case and bezel look extremely nice.

Absolutely do not spend that much for one of these - with time and care, you could be three good examples for what you'd be paying for this one.

My spidey-sense tells me the case has been refinished, and the hand / dial mismatch stands out as well.  Also, anytime I see such "professional" photography my first thought is "what is the seller trying to hide?".
Proud example of "Category 1" on the Time scale of WIS classification

Note sure about the dial hand thing my 6309 shows the lume on the hour markers is darker than the hands this watch had never been opened before I got it, I have seen other original examples show the same colouration, it may depend how it was stored but not sure.

Compared to my 6306 that maybe spent a lot of time in the sun.

I had a couple of ciders and then took the laptop to bed to have one more quick look on the Bay for a project 6309, I was really tired as the quick look turned into two hours or more, then I did another search and came across the 6309 in question and it only had 7 minutes left. The seller seemed genuine and the pics told me it had original dial and hands based upon what I have leaned so far and I am really hoping I did ok.

So I was only sleep dprived and a little tipsy, hope I didnt get another donkey  ???

That my friend is now owned by me  :)  and what a great story to bore my friends with who are already sick of me talking about nothing but Seiko watches.

If you went for it then maybe I have made my first reasonably smart Ebay move! Have I learned anything from all the reading I have done, do you think the dial and hands are original?

Can't wait to start taking it to pieces.

Would you guys be able to help me with a tool list needed to strip it down (not movement - going to get that professionaly repaired/serviced etc.),  I do have some really nice screwdrivers so far  ;D

You never know I might meet a woman in the tool shop  :celebrate:

Ah the man selling his old faithful, watched the bidding but was not tempted, never usually am when I don't fully believe the tales that come with some watches

Nice 6309 Glenn and as original as you will find - well done. If I didn't have one already you would have paid more for it! ;)

All you need now is a case holder, a Jaxa type caseback remover, dial protector, hands remover (I use the Presto type), hands reseters, pegwood, rodico, ultrasonic bath, silicone grease and a oring greaser. You have the screwdrivers!

A good clean, possibly a replacement set of hands (keep the originals), and gaskets, a bracelet or Z22 to wear it on and your done.

Don't wear it on the GL831, keep that for photo shoots!

PS. He only lives just up the road from me, had I won I was going to drive over and collect it and check out his story  :)

Don't worry Geran when this baby is restored and proudly on my wrist and I tell the story, I will add that when he was welding he was attacked by a great white shark that bit his arm off and the when the shark was caught some two years later by a fisherman they found the 6309 intact in its stomach  ;)

Cannop thanks for the list I will need to Google some of those items/tools as I do not know what they are, but thats part of the fun, if you can give me any links to potential suppliers that would be great. If I can get the bits I need I might even be able to start tinkering this weekend.

Have seen the utrasonic baths on Ebay and I saw one the same as the one John used in his 6309 project threads so I will go for that.

If you get chance to drive by his house and see he only has one arm we know the story is all true  :)
