best way to sign a crown?
« on: February 04, 2012, 10:14:45 PM »
whats the best way to sign a crown?
Since Seiko apparently doesn't want to spend the extra cent (it probably costs) to do it?

I'd like to hear ideas that don't involve taking the crown out of the watch.
I was thinking, I f I place the watch on a watch holder, and I designed some sort of "S" like in the Sumo attached to a long pin, and heat it up, and then carefully align it 90 degrees and make contact with the crown, hopefully melting the S sign to the crown.
I mean basically creating a tiny branding iron.

this is just an example:

since this is a watch forum, I am not worried about my idea, or my motive sounding too crazy  :57:

what do you guys think?

I should imagine if you could brand (which i am pretty sure you couldent) it's then more than likely you would be buggered the seal with the heat and perhaps melted any silicone in that area :)

but being a watch forum i could have just written a load of nonsense :) :57:
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is  to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there :)

Most jewelers can do engraving on various surfaces ie bracelets, inside rings, casebacks etc.  why not approach one of your local jewelry retailers and inquire about having the end surface of the crown engraved?

Just a thought, but may prove a safer and cleaner option than a hot forming/branding attempt

Cheers

Thanks for the trust in my skills Tiger  :(

But If I want to do it on many watches, It would be better If I can come up with a home made solution.

the Crowns on, for example, the stargate are out there, they are not close to the seals, so how would it melt anything inside?
I could use a laser, but its kind of expensive...  :-\

we must have written that reply at the same time.
I dont think the lazer way is the cheapest, nor safest... I don't want ending up with an 'S' on my forehead  :))

The acid etch is a good idea, I would consider having a jeweler remove the steel around the "S" So it is in relief  ;)  It wouldn't take much to "Sign" a crown using this method.

Time, You have to remove the crown and coat it in wax, Then remove the wax where you want to etch the "S" Or whatever else one would want to etch.

I suppose one could leave the crown on the watch with etching, Just dip the crown in the wax and cover the watch, You only need a drop of acid for this project.  ;)

Cut out a template, stick it to the crown wrap up the rest of the watch in tape and then shot blast it.

I see what you are saying, but it can still be done with heat....
