2012 limited edition Seiko- SRP233K1
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:48:43 AM »

I'm still waiting for my favorite watch store to get some of these in stock.

I understand the shroud is a rubber/plastic material, which is a big turn off for me. But, just the fact of the watch being bright red, kinda makes me want one.

What are YOUR thoughts?

To each his own, I guess.  It doesn't work for me.   :57:
Some of those, a few of these and a couple of the others.

I have the gold and black one. Would have preferred this one if it was available then.  Not bad for a sub US$300 watch. :86:

Wow, where did you find one for less than $300?

watches88.com is selling them for $499 plus shipping-

I've heard others say they paid around $400...

Not sure what my local dealer will price them at, but hope to find out soon.

The red version has a MSRP of S$735 in Singapore (~US$600).  People have seen it selling in the ~S$450-500 range... that'd still make it ~$400 locally, and the gold/black would be a bit more.  Malaysia or other countries could be selling it for less, I guess...

Seiko really needs to come up with something decent...

The only interesting watch they've come up with the last few years is the reissue Golden Tuna.

I'm on the fence on this one. Cool looking dial, but for a $600 watch I'm surprised they used plastic or rubber on it :(

Over the past few years, I've watched the Japanese yens value shoot through the roof, while the US dollar has been dropping.

I've also noticed more plastic/rubber parts on Seiko's new offerings.

Which leads me to wonder about the new
4R35/36/37 movements...

Even with the currency disparities, I see very low priced Seiko 5 watches with this new movement. Winding and hacking gets me excited since I've always connected it to the top quality 6R15, but not really sure what to expect from the 4R36 day-date.

Thanks for the link-

Personally, I don't think I want it that bad...

If I can get one for less than $400, I MIGHT pull the trigger.

For some reason seikos are way cheaper here in the Philippines.

Read more about this model here.

Wow-

Thanks for that link.

I guess I need to join the Philippine watch club, since it's in English. (I'm an American expat that's not fluent in Tagalog)

After reading up on the "baby tuna" as it's called on other forums, I'm realizing my chances are slim on finding one at a discounted price.  If my local watch store only gets one watch, there are already people on the waiting list ahead of me.

I guess I'll just search around town tomorrow and try to get lucky, since they started appearing at local Seiko dealers yesterday.

A plastic shroud for $500? No thanks. If that had a stainless or aluminum shroud I would be all over it. As it is they should slap a 5 on it and lower the price by half imho.

I'm wondering if Seiko will mass produce this watch in more mainstream colors after the limited editions are all sold.

And, maybe put a 5 on the dial and lower the price???

I'm still a beginner in this hobby, so I really don't have a clue about it.

I'd be worried about the plastic shroud rotting away or cracking, similar to what happens to G-Shock bezels over time.  And then Seiko probably wouldn't make replacement shrouds readily available either.

Well, I'd much rather be in the hunt for one of these-

http://www.watchtime.com/2011/04/seiko-ananta-dive-chronographh-sportura-alarm-chronograph/

But the $4700 suggested retail price makes me take pause...

I like the look of the Sumo. But to me even a 22mm strap seems kinda thin for a big diver. I can't imagine being happy with a 20mm lug width.

There's the Orient M force, I guess. I like it, but never tried an Orient.

Any other suggestions?

$400-$500 auto diver that will retain some value?

If you like that one then try one of these SSC0154 Solar Divers. I think they're in the $400 ballpark (but I could be wrong). Other colours are available but I don't remember the model #s. Picture borrowed from the net.
Edit;  Actuaslly found one on the bay with a BIN of $249

Hey Aurelius,

     Thanks for the suggestion.

I read a couple of threads on here about the solar divers, and they're nice.

But I don't wear quartz watches.
