Lets see your favorite beaters!
« on: February 03, 2012, 05:19:55 PM »
Long before I'd ever heard the term WIS, I wore a 7548 as my one and only daily watch. Wore it for 30 years. Then I decided to treat myself and get one of those really cool Seiko divers with the screws going right into the sides and while searching online I found the watch forums. So after I got my Tuna I read that it was too special to wear as a daily beater ;) (I still wear it a lot though) so the quest was on for a new beater.
Enter the Zilla. I got a SS Zilla and loved it and then bought another used one because my new beater was too nice to wear as a beater. It was a bit heavy too so I decided that a Ti Zilla was just the thing and sold both SS to fund a Ti. I LOVE the Ti Zilla especially with the new titanium Suppa adaptors...but it's just too nice for a beater especially now that they're becoming scarcer.
Enter the Seiko Flightmaster. I picked it up used locally for a song and really really like it. It had scrapes and scuffs and "needed" a new crystal so it was a perfect beater. Nice size and weight and a 200m rating and I couldn't stop playing with the chrono...Then I replaced the crystal (my OCD would allow no less) and now....it's too nice to be a beater.
So I think I've now found the perfect beater. I saw a review on PMWF for the Sottomarino Manta Gigante. It's a slab (literally) of stainless steel with a Miyota 8215 auto, sapphire crystal, mesh bracelet and a 200m rating. The case measures 60mm across and 46mm lug to lug but is only 11mm tall. It is the "Tool Watch" poster boy as it looks like it was made with a hacksaw and a miter box and screwed together with 6 bolts. It could be used as a straight edge, a windshield scraper (useful in Canada), a bottle opener, a self defence weapon, anchor,or an ugly stick. Is it too nice? HELL no! This thing could not be uglier...PERFECT!! I have found beater Nirvana! The best part is it was $120 to my door in a fleabay BIN blowout(MSRP on the tag was $499).
Let's see your perfect beater.

Beat this! :57: (OK mario... you already did :-[ )

By the way, Indera - I'm not sure you allowed to have a beater as nice as that spring-drive - I'm sure that must be against the rules :57: That watch is pretty much my ultimate grail right now - have you had it since new? Does it live up to expectations?

haha some of you are just showing off (love that 7c43)!

Here is a true beater, a watch I intended to post about as "The Seiko I Love to Hate".  It was the first ebay purchase I made, my first watch purchase after (re)discovering Seikos, the topic of my first post on the old forum, and it stands for everything I respect about Seiko:

I give you the V743-8090, SJW031P1.  I was busy discovering the vast landscape of eBay while trying to find my first Seiko of my new era, an emotional grail - a 7a28 7049 - when I found this.  I think the seller was a sly fox, as it had a spiel about selling off his collection, only two mediocre images, both of which made the dial look black.  What did I know, I was just starting.

When I got it I was bit surprised: its small, the dial is OD green, it was on some cheap used black crocograin strap, and the crown!  Aiyiyi:

This shot doesnt show the amount of distortion of the crown, it seriously looks like he pounded nails with it.  But oh, well, it runs, lets see how it goes.

As my only regular watch it clearly started as my daily wearer.  Given the fact it wasnt pristine it was easy to wear it without concern which is exactly what you need from a beater.  I have small wrists and it was certainly inconspicuous and comfortable, and I found some rubber 'bracelet' straps from Stella that I really liked.

Grudgingly the watch started to impress me: a 200m rating, a domed crystal, screw down crown, day/date, drilled lugs, nicely detailed... So its a Pulsar movement (closely related to, if not a, 7n?) and a little plain looking but that seems to me to be in keeping: unostentatious, robust, practical.

I have since fallen for fancier flashier watches with all sort of alluring promises to keep +/-15 secs a year, or show GMT, or show off their 1/20th secs chrono register, but if I had to go live in a hut in Antarctica for 6 months tomorrow and had 30 secs to pick a watch, I bet I would regret not picking this one...

My Beater is a 6309-7040   that had the DEEPEST  Crunch Ding  by the 13 min markers

I bought her from a Member   She was in 95% Cond  except for this Deep Ding. It appears
this Ding happened when the watch was NEWish and Put in a Draw for 30 yrs after this Ding???

This is the Kind of Wabi  I find acceptable   The Character of this watch   her Story Scar of Life
but as far as all the OEM Parts  Top Shelf  w/o the worry of Scratching her

I sent her to Pete K he added the hacking Kit and Few extra jewels and
a Black Kanji Day/Date     Pressure tested  and has been a JOY

I never Notice the Ding :035:  only her Beauty

I'm a carpenter and I work outside a lot. I needed a watch for work so I bought a cheap Invicta  :-[   Not a good move. While it looked nice at first, it fell apart real fast. The band broke twice and on the second time, the fall to the ground killed it. Lasted about 6 months.

Here is the watch I bought from this forum about a year and a half ago. It's pretty banged up but spot on time wise. Maybe off one min. per month.

This is the one I use when getting down and dirty. Its one super tough watch.
Bought it for "little lunch" money years ago from a local pawn shop. Before the internet was widely used to research prices etc.

A man given a  watch on his retirement said its about " time"

I purchased this Sports 100 new in, I think 1982. Served me great. Sent to Seiko for new battery and gaskets and pressure test, in early 2000. They sent it back with a new battery and said that they no longer stocked the gaskets, buy your self a new watch. It is my all time favorite.

I searched and found the forums, and it was down hill. :57:

I had Jack at IWW clean it up and here she is now.

At work I use the G-Shock for Atomic time keeping as I need to set clocks on equipment and write the time on documents I print out for Doctors, the time frame is watched by the hospital I work at.

Now days I rotate watches quite a bit. :57:

Purchased for $3.00 US at a Goodwill store.  I needed a beater for wearing at night with easy to read lumibright type illumination.  It came on a woven soft leather strap that is the most comfortable strap I have ever worn.  I truly appreciate its lightweight, soft strap, and ability to clearly read the time during darkest of conditions.

I have an old beat-up work watch with a Miyota movement that simply refuses to die--20+ years later, no matter how I abuse it.  Occasionally, I have to open it to clean crude out of the case.  And, it's so ugly I've never taken a pic of it and don't intend to start now.  Other than that I do not have any beaters.  Wabi makes me ILL!

I do have several travel watches, three of my five Eco-Drive 2100/210 series, but they aren't beaters, either, sorry.  ;D ;D ;D
