I was watching that one. Glad it went to somebody here. That way I might be able to see more pics of it! It's a real beauty! But, sorry, I know nothing about the model.

I wish the designers of that beauty could influence the design of some of today's Seikos and Citizens. That baby would look good with a tux or a t-shirt and everything in between.

:iagree:  Really, how hard would it be to bring these hands back and put them on a clean and simple dial??

Congrats to the Vintage Citizen, we are not many who likes these.
The Aces are often nice watches, I would say medium grade quality from Citizen from early 60`s.

Your Ace looks like it have suffered from an quite artistic repaint of the dial.
My guess it had raised gold hour markers from beginning as it have gold coloured hands.
Then painted over and filled in with black by hand.
Looks cool I would say.

This quick pic shows how they normally look like with SS case and some gold colour.

I suspect Sweephand will be around in an minute to supply us with all information needed.

As Bjorn says, the Ace was a mid-range watch launched in 1961 which followed the success of the Deluxe first produced in 1958 - more info on my blog here: http://sweep-hand.org/2011/05/30/this-weeks-featured-watch-5-the-ace/

Although often simply styled dress watches, there were others with lumed markers, and with more decorated dials. There was an Ace Date with date window, and also a much rarer Super Ace version.

I agree with Bjorn that yours has a repainted dial and markers.

I received the watch yesterday.
it looks excellent, better than I expected.
the markers look a little out of whack only when looking very close, as in macro mode or through a loupe.

the thing is, its a manual wind watch, and I don't know if the movement has overwinding protection. does anyone know?

BTW, it also has drilled lugs

I'll post some pics soon!  :great:

I don't think you can over-wind them, but I'm not sure. I always take care when I wind them, to feel for it tightening up and stop turning.

I saw it had drilled lugs, which is consistent of course with an original case.

Don't worry, you can't over wind a watch. The end of the mainspring in a manually-wound watch is rigidly affixed to the wall of the mainspring barrel. When the mainspring is wound fully, you can't turn the crown any more. If you force it, you might break something,  but you wouldn't do that, would you? :-)

Automatic movements use mainsprings with slipping bridles on the end. When the mainspring is fully wound, and the autowind system attempts to wind it more, the end of the mainspring slips against the wall of the barrel.

Some manually-wound watches use barrels from automatic watches, so they can be wound by hand indefinitely. I think there's a Grand Seiko that's built like this.

Enjoy your new watch!

That's impressive  :great:   Although I'm also not that surprised,  I find that my old hand winders keep very good time.
