Worst case: broken upper pivot of balance staff.  Better case: something with excessive end-shake or improper clearances rubbing in that position.  Other possibilities exist.

Hi Tony, you pick up some interesting watches and I hope you can sort out this little joker.  Noah's diagnosis is logical and if correct probably a royal pain in the arse to put right. I do not know what acceptable slack feels like but have noticed a little on some mechanical watches I have that run well enough, good luck.

Will drop it in to my watchmaker, but have found a source of 9159 NOS movements that will work..

I know this is going to sound dumb, but is the battery tight in there or does it move around when the dial is up and then down?

Update.. My watchmaker was closed today and I had time on my hands..  So..

Changed the balance wheel using the one from the Olympic electronic..  Watch now running fine..  Hope to get NOS movement so that will be used for the Olympic..

Now just have to work out how to fix the day wheel as it is not changing..  Yet again, if anyone has any knowledge to do with the day wheel mechanism on the ESA 9158 it would be appreciated..

Cheers

Hi Tony,
I have seen Junghans 600 electronic movements with a similar problem - runs ok dial down, stops dead dial up.

Examination of the balance staff almost always shows the rear-facing balance staff pivot to be shorter than the other end - not broken.

One theory for this fault is that inadequate lubrication and a very (relatively) heavy balance wheel combined with the watch spending most of it's time dial up causes the balance staff to 'grind away' against the capstone.

Correct lubrication of the balance pivots and either pulling the crown to stop the movement or storing watch crown up/down may help to prolong it's life.

Can you have a look at the balance staff and eyeball the length of both pivots ?

Regards.
