Cases vs. Movements
« on: January 04, 2012, 02:57:42 AM »
Dear Comrades,

I read somewhere about adding a piece (Bridge or lever) to 6309 movements, thus making these movements hackable, as well.

It is doable, isn't it? One reason I am fond of 6306 movements is this hacking feature. Is 6306 movement windable, too?

Another question is can we find NOS or in very condition 6306 movements? I would like to ask the same question for 6309 movements, too.

Does 6306 movement fit into;

1 - 6309 (In other words 70xx or 7xxx) cases?

2 - SKX1xx (For example, SKX171, 173, 007, 009) cases?

I remember being told that 6306 movement won't fit into newer generation cases, such as SKX cases.

Is there any table, graphic, info (In excel format?) showing which movements will and won't into which cases? So that, before starting a mod, before buying the parts we will know which case, movement, crystal, bezel, insert we need and we don't need.

Thanks for your helps . . .

The 6306 is basically a 6309 with seconds setting (hacking) and a few more jewels.  It cannot be wound from the crown. It will fit in any case a 6309 will fit in, e.g. 6309-7040/7049 and 6309-7290/729A. It will also fit in the 7548-7000 case. It will not fit in the 7002 and 7S26 cases.

Best wishes,
Myles

Fantastic info, Myles! Thank you very much.  O:-)

Ever since I have been dreaming a mod: 6306 movement in the 7548-7000 (700x) case. This is a very good news. Now a complete 7548 (700x) case and 6306 movement hunt begins  :great: :035: .

Very Best Regards . . .

Serdal,

The 6309-729A/7290 case is very similar to the 7548-7000 case, and might be easier to find in good condition.

Best of luck,
Myles

To answer your first question, yes, you can get a "hacking kit" for a 6309 which consists of a centre wheel bridge and the hacking lever. Not easy to fit if you have not rebuilt a movement before as you have to remove the train wheel bridge to fit this kit, which can be difficult to replace.

Thanks a lot for this precious info, SKX. No, I hadn't even opened a case back before  :'( ::) . I am planning to get some training about case polishing, brushing, parts replacements, basic movement servicing and eventually some watchmaking tasks.

This hacking is one of my favourites which I will try to learn.

And I am looking for a very friendly book and video which teaches watchmaking from entry level to advanced one.

Very Best Regards . . .
