6138-7000 Slide Rule Restoration
« on: May 05, 2010, 12:40:15 AM »
As we're now posting restorations I thought that I'd add a couple(which some of you have seen already).
This counts as one of my best ever grabs from the bay,   arriving like this for a vary reasonable price:
6138-7000
The watch dates from December 1971, it wasn't   running and had obviously seen a fair bit of use, but tightening a few   screws had the movement running perfectly. I refinished   the case, replaced the crystal with a NOS one from Jonathan Koch (which   sits ever so slightly lower than the original) and added a NOS cursor   ring from Rob in the Netherlands. For the time being I decided not to   replace the original bezel and I've put it on a Seiko bracelet of the   same age. Here's the finished result:
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000
6138-7000

Alex, you seem to have developed a super technique for refinishing your cases.  Can you tell us how you do it?
Thanks
Martin

That is a real beauty, you did a great job on it Alex.
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is  to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there :)

Thanks for the kind words Martin,

I've posted just such a thing on my website: http://axbwatches.comoj.com/watchpages/technique01.html and in the how to section: http://www.thewatchsite.com/index.php/topic,488.0.html in preparation for just such a question...

My technique is tailored for those with minimal equipment levels...I hope it's helpful.

Thanks Alex - that's very interesting.  I was not aware of these MAXX tools before.  They look like just the thing I have been looking for.

I found them in my local model making shop when I went to buy some Tamiya spray and thought "Just the thing...", you can buy a pack of mixed grade sanding belts for them - and/or make your own from wet and dry with judicious use of tape and staples! They've been really good for case refinishing.
