ok, need parts for a WW2 vintage 15j G.S.T.P Brit pocket watch...
« on: September 03, 2011, 03:41:12 AM »
I picked up a beautiful watch from Australia - just lovely.   It would be a runner except that there are two problems - the reverse-thread screw holding down the main gear above the mainspring has broken, and the balance is bad.  The movement is unmarked.

How would I go about sourcing parts for this?  With a new balance and the one missing screw I could have this running in ten minutes!

It looks like a generic Swiss mvmt kind of crudely fit into an American made case. You need to find someone who deals with vintage watches as their main thing and they would probably have the parts from a parts watch. Theoretically a competent watchmaker should be able to make the parts for you but the expense might be very high and finding such person isn't easy either.

The Swiss and U.S use a different system for sizes so that mvmt doesn't fit in the case so they made it fit.

Yes, it's a Franken - a British WIS identified the movement as a Unitas - UT 30.  The hands aren't correct, the movement isn't correct for the case.  It's like four different watches.

I'm still going to try to hunt down the balance for it; it'd be fun to get it running

Hey Spencer.  I may be able to source a crystal for you if you need it.  P.M. me with a size and I'll look.

My watchmaker is never happier than when he is at his lathe turning up a new balance staff. However he's retired now and only does jobs he likes.
