Bell-matic won't advance day.
« on: August 19, 2011, 10:59:10 PM »
Hello newer member here.
Broke a leg and crushed my heal in other one 3 months ago. So while Iv'e been "layin around", I s-tarted collecting watches.
Most recently I acquired a Seiko 4006 6027 blue. Its in pretty decent shape but it seems the day will not advance.  How much trouble is that to fix or have fixed?

I have another 4006 that works fine so I understand how it functions.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,
there might just be dirt and other "shmutz" restricting the alarm button.  Do you know how to remove the caseback?

Yeah I took case back off.

But alarm button works fine to advance the date. I have a problem with day of week. Which should advance every 24 hours or when I go back and forth between 1:30 and 9:30.

Thanks
Bob

From my limited knowledge repairing these ringing beasts, I would suggest that the day jumper is loose, probably due to a severe shock the watch has suffered. Does the Day appear to be somewhat misaligned, i. e., 'half-shown', too?

If it is only a matter with the day jumper, it should be an easy repair for a good watchmaker at a fair price.

I am sure Sir Bentley knows more about this!

Hermann

Yep, than that is likely the cause.

I had it on two of my Bell-Matics as well. Trouble is, you can only solve that problem from the dial side, meaning you have to remove alarm ring, hands and dial to solve the problem. Which is why I at my current experience let my watchmaker do it, since I am still afraid of damaging the precious hands & dial :-)

Here I tried to photograph what I am talking about - depicted is the date dial guard of the calibre 4006A (right) and the bottom of the daywheel.
On the date dial guard you can see a small lever with a spring. This is called a jumper, causing resistance to the daywheel and thus causing it to 'jump' instead of advancing continually. If this lever (and thus the date wheel) is misaligned, AFAIK the daywheel cannot advance.

Sounds about right
Now if my local watch guy can  repair that. I have another 4006 that has a misaligned day only I whack it.. But it still sets and advances.

One of the most common reasons for the day wheel not working properly is the dial disc, it flattens out and loses it's tension allowing the day wheel disc to ride up.

Easy and cheap fix but the dial/hands do have to be removed before the fix can take place.
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is  to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there :)
