New fishing trip turns up a 4005...
« on: August 06, 2011, 07:26:21 PM »
After recently selling my only Bell, I spotted this one on the Bay. Knowing enough about them to realize these are pretty hard to find, I took a gamble. I think it looks pretty good. Bracelet just fits but it is a tad tight, but a fellow awesome forumer is coming to my rescue.

Just one issue to fix on it is that the quickset is not working. It is a little weird, as you cant press in the alarm crown at all....

As I said before, VERY nice 4005, AJ!

Congrats on that nice purchase  :bravo_2:
I think of all Bell-Matics, I like the 4005-700/4006-601 cases best... Especially when they still have the original case top finish...

Strange thing about the QS - haven't had that on any of my Belles before...

Maybe Sir Bentley can chime in on that issue?

Have you tried taking the alarm button out - can it be, that it is just stuck?

Best,
Hermann

Looking at my 4005 and comparing it to your's, it looks like your alarm button is stuck, pressed in. I'm sure you know how to fix this small issue  :great:

Awesome looking watch, love the dial/hands/markers combo.  If debris isn't preventing normal travel of the button, then I'd suspect an alarm button stem that is cut too short.  That's be an easier fix than dismantling the dial side to suss out a problem there, but that is another possibility.  Worth the effort either way, you don't just find 4005's laying around- well, I don't anyways.

Thanks guys. It really is a true survivor.

The watch was disassembled and cleaned, so there was no gunk behind the alarm button, and I had a spare so I tried that to no avail. Unfortunately, as you suggest Noah, I will have to dismantle the dial side to see what is going on. When I get it apart, I will try to remember to post some pics of what the issue is...

Photos would be really nice, we rarely get to see the dial side of a movement :) :)

That looks superb AJ, i think the 4005 is one of my favourite Belles, the date only looks so clean IMO.

Great how Seiko stamped the end pieces of the old bracelets and that bracelet in particular always looks good i think.

Note the cut out on the bezel it is only the 4005 that has that due to the slimmer width i believe.

The non working pusher can be a few things but tends to be a easy fix, can be caused by corrosion as damp/water tends to get in the belles through the crown or pusher tube.

Just as a cautionary note many of the parts of the 4005 are not interchangeable with the 4006 again due to the thickness of the movement.
I have been in Deepshit many times; the older I get, the easier it is  to get there. I actually kind of enjoy it there :)

I've always like the date-only feature of the 4005.   ;)

Oh my, what an evening we spent together this movement and I.

First time I have been on the dial side of a Bell, let alone a 4005 and damned if it doesn't have the gnarliest date jumper spring ever.... Lost one, had to find another and I did.

So it turns out that the whole date corrector piece was missing, nowhere to be found. Thankfully I had an old busted 4006 movement for parts with this piece intact so was able to replace it with that one as they are the same.

Its way past my bed time, so no pictures tonight, but I did take a bunch of the dial side in various states of undress.

As an aside, if anybody has a nice date wheel for a 4005 feel free to let me know. Several of the days have some missing text. Unfortunately this part is not shared with the 4006...

Maybe I spoke too soon, after re-assembly it seemed to work, but now when you press the quickset in, the day finger releases too early, not going far enough on the date wheel gear to advance the date. Regular midnight date change works fine... Anybody seen this issue before?

Maybe that's due to what TigerUK was describing earlier?   :(   Good lucK!

Is what you describe (not going far enough in) happening with the cased movement only, or also with the movement outside of the case?

Its still outside the case, I was just doing final testing before putting it back together. If I manually manipulate the day finger, it works fine, so the issue is that it releases too early when you use the alarm button. I am guessing something is worn down..

As you say AJ the 4005 date wheel is unique to the 4005 i had to replace mine when i got it.

The first time you encounter those click springs it is "fun" :)

So I think the problem is that the original click spring I had flew off, and the one I had in my spare, was I think of a different thickness and this additional tension could be what is causing the quickset not to work properly. So unless I can find the spring this evening, I am going to have to live with it until I find another.

Yep, I have an email or two out looking for a new date wheel, any chance you have a lead on one John?

I was certain I would just be able to pull one out of a 4006 but they are substantially different as you know.

AJ,

did you use the date jumper spring from your spare 4006A movement?

If so, that should be correct - at least my 1972 parts interchangeability guide lists the same spring for ALL Bell-Matic movements!

Surprisingly one of the best 20 minutes I have spent on the floor. I willed it so, and it was. The original spring is mine so the shenanigans will start all over again this evening.....

I thought I did Hermann as I got it out of a 4006a movement parts bin, but as I just found the original, I can confirm the one I used is thicker, hence the extra resistance I'm guessing....

Keeping fingers crossed that the wrong jumper spring is the issue!!

So I have an hour or two before I get into this. Anybody have a trick to simplify the re-assembly of this bloody spring for the date corrector on the 4005/6.

I have literally done loads of them AJ and the first thing i do is have a smoke and relax before doing it, once you get the hang of it it is not too bad a job (once you get the hang of it :) ).

As far as I can tell from my very limited experience, doing this with some anger in the stomach after a frustrating day at work is not too good of an idea :D
