Default Calling all owners of SKX399 & SKX401

I'm trying to complete my research regarding the "Philippine SEIKO". The SKX models 399 & 401 are usually regarded as the "Philippine SEIKO" because these watches were first seen in the Philippines and therefore assumed that it was released only in the Philippines. There were also other sightings in some Southeast Asian countries (Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam). When it was first spotted as a pre-owned acquisition watch, the buyer was doubting its authenticity. Others assumed that it was a fake or a SKX007 or SKX009 modded using an aftermarket dial. Forums immediately scrutinized these watch models since they were never announced as an official SEIKO release. Until now, I really don't understand why it was not officially released. The only reason I can think of is that it was only released in the Philippines or Southeast asia. These watch models were only recognized as authentic when some SEIKO collectors were able to acquire and report that they were able to purchase brand new samples from authorized SEIKO dealers. Thus, it became official that both the 399 and 401 are "real" SEIKO watches.

Presently, these watches are getting scarce (SKX399) and rare (SKX401). There is also a demand (collectors looking for one) and therefore frankens (cobbled up watch), fakes and aftermarkets are appearing to pose as the real thing. I am researching to establish a base line or reference for these watch models. I have seen a lot of samples both real and fake. But, I still believe that I should continue with my research for the benefit of watch lovers who love or collect Seiko watches.

That is why, I am calling all owners of the SKX399 & SKX401. Please post your watch and answer the following details:

watch model: 399 or 401?
Acquired Brand new or Pre-owned?
Production date: Indicate first number of serial number. Ex: 7xxxxxxx means 1997 or 2007 depending on production release
Day wheel English-Roman Numeral or English-Spanish

Your watch picture and answering the following details will greatly help with my research and hopefully i will post an article that can be used as reference.

Advance thanks to anyone who will help me in this endeavor.

Hi Sir Chrono, I don't think that's what asap3 meant. He was just citing serial number 7xxx as an exemplar....

And to avoid confusion, I think he should have asked the members to give the serial numbers on their casebacks, rather than asking the production dates....

No this is just an example. I would like to know all the starting numbers of the serial numbers so that we can try to determine the production year of these watches.

In my long search, there is no definitive production year/s established for these watches. As an example, the 6105-8110/9 has an established production year of 1970 til 1977.

The first number of the serial number written on the caseback is the production year. There are some owners who are not comfortable of giving their serial numbers. That is why I am just asking for the first number then xxxxx the remaining.

Hope this clarify things

Thank you for this valuable information. I have seen also 399s and 401s with serial numbers ending 2004 but the earliest I've seen is 1997.

What puzzles me is that these watches were produced from 1997 to 2004 (assuming only and not yet confirmed) and this means SEIKO produced it for 7 years. So why only a few samples popping out? Maybe Seiko produced it in limited quantities? Or most ended their lifespan after use and abuse.

I have seen pre-owned 399s ending up in pawnshops in the Philippines. Also, most of the 399s popping in eBay usually have aftermarket bezels. The 401 is harder to find. Most of the 401s I have seen have 399 dials with Pepsi bezels. The real 401 dial is bluish dark depending on lighting and has the exact same shade as the dial of the Skx009.
