Some time ago I acquired this 6139-6010 Sports 5 Speedtimer Proof as a non-runner. Whats so rare you might ask? Well, for starters it's all original from the earliest months in the 6139 production line. It dates to May of 69'. It came with the earliest style crystal which are seldom seen and totally unattainable as far my collecting experience goes.
It has a deep blue Sunburst dial with the Speedtimer + Sports 5 Proof logos. This style of dial, as far as I know, only came in two colors: Blue + Black, and was only used in 69'. It has the Kanji day wheel.....
It has the very early "frosted" hands rather then the shinny hands and comes with a 2 piece second hand. It's powered by a 6139A 21J Speedtimer movement. It being a non-runner, I had hoped for the best but it turned out the center chronograph wheel clutch had separated, so to speak, which would require a full movement service along with a not so easy to source 6139A vertical clutch. Luckily, I had the parts on hand. All that was needed was a little spare time. I finally had a chance to tear it down and clean the parts.........
The overhaul went smooth as silk, if you could call it that. I did have an issue with one of the cap jewels for the escape wheel which had a finicky retainer clip. I especially like the attention to detail of Seiko's red script on the winding + balance bridges...........On the timegrapher it had good amplitude and I adjusted the beat error to .01. I also regulated it to about +15 seconds dial up which should run about -10 sec to + 10 sec on the wrist. Time will tell........
And now, the finished watch. I reused the original crystal due to unavailability of a replacement. I gently cleaned the case by hand and then in the ultrasonic. Since it was in great condition I left the finish original.
Another Keeper.........
