Default Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 Manual winding 4522-8000 Circa 1969

Hi,

There are ten days I made the acquisition of Seiko GS Hi-Beat 36000 Bph manual winding 4522-8000 watch.

That is made to watchmaker jeweller of Seoul, South Korea, specializing in the old watches of good quality Asian and European.

The watch was produced in 1969. It is in Stainless steel case and back. Diameter without the crown is 36,4mm and lug to lug 42mm.

The overall condition of the case in good condition. The original dial has been kept in quite good status. The crown is of origin. Caliber 4522A, 25jewels manual winding movement has been kept in excellent condition and keeps accurate time, in ten days + 2 sec.

The original medalion is in near mint condition. Overall condition of this watch is very nice. She comes with a new aftermarket leather band and buckle GS. I will buy a Deployment buckle with push GS among our friend Seiya-San.

Thus, it will be perfect for me.

I am 6 photographs taken by the watchmaker, 4 with my cellphone, are wrist shot, more Deployment buckle with push GS Seiya-San.

Do not hesitate to say what you think of this watch. Thank you.

Cheers,

J-P

A very nice watch J-P - this style is a classic that will always look good imho whatever fashions come and go. I was going to call it a 'timeless' classic but that wouldn't be very clever in a watch!

It is however slightly confusing that your watch has a Suwa dial mark. The 4522 is a Daini watch (as marked on the medallion).

Hi,

Indeed I had not made special attention at the purchase, or now. Perhaps that, contrary to according to the watchmaker, there has been a manipulation of its part, I think case back because The medallion was not in good condition and that the watch losing its market value.

Of all ways, it is the mark of the company which has manufactured watches and their calibers. Daini Seikosha Co,Ltd (Kameido, Koto-Ku, Tokyo) which has become Seiko Instruments Inc. and Suwa Seikosha Co, Ltd (Suwa-Shi, Nagano) which it has become Seiko Epson Corporation.

I am making you the link of "The History of Grand Seiko" written by Seiya Kobayashi, that you had already read.

That is most likely a 6145/6 caliber.

I agree with Martback- the 45xx stream was definitely a Daini creation. I have a King Seiko (4502) that also has a Suwa dial logo. It's dial has been refinished at some point however, I imagine they used the closest pattern they had- that's how it goes with refinished dials. Notice the "Japan" text at the bottom without further dial numbers- this is often found on refinished dials I've noticed, perhaps correlating to a dial that has been refinished in Japan. Martback, would you say you see that characteristic more exclusively from Japanese refinished dials, or does that also show up from dials that have been refinished in other markets? It's only anecdotal on my part, and I'd say you've scoured more Japanese auctions and sales that I have. I'm happy to be corrected.

In closing, this is a small detail that most would overlook, and certainly shouldn't diminish one's enjoyment of a timepiece. I hold the 45xx stream in high esteem, it suits my tastes in movements very well and seems to be a result of Seiko's efforts in Swiss Observatory Trials in the 1960's- quite a momentous time for Seiko.

Hi Martin and Noah,

Ok my friends, I willingly acknowledges having been naive and put fact suckered by this watchmaker.

I was so happy (I am always) to be able finally give me a former with GS specially the movement 45XX mechanical with manual winding (4522), that I have done abstraction of all the rest.

This watch is almost not found in Europe, which explains part of my misadventure.

You have opened the eyes, I am very grateful, thank you again to both of you, Martin and Noah. Now I know whom to turn to find excellent advice.

Cheers,

J-P (Jean-Paul)

I have not made any particular observations about Japanese redials other than that they are usually of a higher quality than the SE Asian examples and probably done more as a part of day to day upkeep rather than a complete refresh before a sale. They are also not very common except for a few models with the certified KS Chronometer in particular, presumably as a Japanese redial before a sale would not be profitable.

Still a very nice watch where the movement in particular looks very nice. It just should not cost as much as a fully original watch in the same condition.
